History of Photography

3 Units

Recording images of the world was not a new concept in the nineteenth century. Evidence of man’s early interest in these images probably goes back in time at least to the fifth century B.C. where the basic optical principles of the pinhole were commented on in Chinese texts. The philosopher Mo Ti (later Mo Tsu) may have been the first person to record the formation of an inverted image with a pinhole.

This course is a survey of the history of photography circa 1839 to the present and introduces the student to the various concepts of photographic representation in significant facets of society.
